Through an astronomy talk given by astronomer Silvio Ulloa, students at Frankfort City School expanded their knowledge of the colors and lights of the universe.
The Center for Astrophysics and Related Technologies (CATA) (ANID Basal Center) held a talk entitled “Colors of the Universe”, at the Ciudad de Frankfort School in the municipality of San Joaquín. Sixty students from the school attended the event, which was presented by Silvio Ulloa, astronomer and science communicator at CATA.
Using accessible language, the conversation aimed to bring concepts of astronomy closer to the students. “Colors, and in particular the light we receive from space and how we interpret it, is a daily task in astronomy, and bringing it closer to students from the perspective of ‘what we see with our eyes’ in sunlight is a very good example,” said Silvio Ulloa.
The astronomer also highlighted the participation of the school’s students. “The reception was excellent. There were students from different grades, and most of them showed interest. The questions were also varied, and it was gratifying to have spoken in front of them.”
Along the same lines, the astronomer highlighted the importance of bringing these types of events to schools. “These activities spark students’ curiosity and bring them closer to a reality that feels very distant but, being in Chile, is not so far away. Astronomy is a science that fascinates many people, and being able to have this experience at such a young age creates a hunger for knowledge,” said the CATA outreach specialist.
The school appreciated Silvio’s presentation and highlighted the role of our Center in scientific outreach. “We are grateful for Silvio’s presentation. Without a doubt, we were all delighted and eager to continue learning about the universe. We believe that CATA is a direct link to scientific literacy, allowing students in training to learn, question, and encourage critical thinking,” said Mariel Gaete, Natural Sciences teacher at Colegio Ciudad de Frankfort.
