CATA researcher was awarded the “Excellence in Doctoral Thesis Supervision” prize

Márcio Catelan, Research Associate, was recognized for his role in guiding the doctoral thesis

In a ceremony organized by the Graduate School of the UC Vice Rector’s Office for Research, CATA Associate Researcher, PhD in Astrophysics, and academic of the UC Faculty of Physics, Márcio Catelan was awarded for his excellence in the direction of doctoral theses in the area of “Natural and Exact Sciences, Earth Sciences, Technologies and Engineering” given by this house of studies.

This recognition is awarded to those professors who stand out for their excellent work as mentors, fostering an independent researcher mentality in their graduates, good practices focused on the adequate academic progress of their students and a healthy relationship with their thesis students, the community and the doctorate.

For Catelan, this recognition “is a tremendous honor, especially when it takes place in such an emotional ceremony. This award has a very special meaning for me, since it represents more than 20 years of dedication to guiding students, not only doctoral students, but also masters and undergraduate students. I have always tried to do it in a personalized way, considering the strengths, weaknesses and scientific interests of each student, in order to help them reach their full potential. I do this without losing sight of the fact that thesis students are human beings who, on many occasions, need more holistic support that transcends the strictly scientific and academic”, said the CATA researcher.

For Elise Servajean, General Manager of CATA, “our Center integrates a pool of professionals that not only conducts research to address the fundamental problems in astrophysics, but also promotes the education and training of new generations of astrophysicists, astrophysicists and high-level engineers to develop technologies that respond to the needs of industry and society. Having astronomers and astronomers, most of whom teach and who have an integrating vision in the transfer of knowledge not only makes CATA proud, but is also very much in line with the objectives set by the Center to return this knowledge in tools that improve the daily lives of people, companies and the community in general,” said the authority.

It should be noted that Márcio’s research area stands out for the study of stellar structure and evolution, globular clusters and variable stars. His interests include the investigation of pulsating stars, stellar populations, stellar agglomerates, the study of the Milky Way and its neighborhood in the Local Group.
