A season of online astronomy talks will be given by the U. of Chile this weekend

Due to the lack of rain this Saturday, August 6th and Sunday, August 7th - as part of the celebration of Children's Day - knowledge of space will seek to flood Chilean homes. There will be eight lectures suitable for all audiences, which will be broadcast on Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter.

This is the third time that the University of Chile, with support from the Center of Excellence in Astrophysics CATA, will hold an event like this. “We want people to feel invited. This event is completely free. All you have to do is connect and learn. There will be four male astronomers and four female astronomers. We are sure that you will love it from the comfort of your own home”, explains Ricardo Muñoz, Director of the Department of Astronomy FCFM of the University of Chile.

This year the theme of the series will be spacecraft, among the presentations will be: How to leave the Earth, the Space Shuttle, the trip to the Moon and Nasa’s Artemis Mission, just to name a few. “We have created this series with a lot of love, our talks will have many images and videos that will seek to make both girls and boys dream of traveling in space,” concludes Elise Servajean, PhD in Astronomy and CEO of the CATA Astrophysics Center.

Among the speakers will be scientists of high public knowledge such as Professor José Maza, National Prize of Exact Sciences and Uchile astronomer; Bernardita Ried, Master in Physics and who is about to start her PhD in Physics mention in Astrophysics at Stanford and César Fuentes, Ph.D in Astrophysics from Harvard, academic of Astronomy Uchile and expert in Solar System, among others.

The talks will be simultaneously reproduced by dozens of Facebook accounts of municipalities, foundations, tourist observatories, commercial firms and educational entities throughout Chile, as well as Youtube and Facebook accounts.

Reaching a wider audience

All talks will have sign language interpretation. “We are privileged to be the planet’s window to the universe, we are fortunate. For us it is a joy to be able to deliver this series with sign language interpretation and to be able to reach a wider audience”, says Walter Max-Moerbeck, Head of Extension of the Department of Astronomy FCFM of the U. de Chile.

Day 1: Saturday, August 6

1.- How to leave the Earth?

Summary:

The inaugural talk of our Cycle, will be the starting point to understand how human beings have been able – through observation and ingenuity – to overcome nature and manage to get out of our planet… first satellites and then manned spacecraft.

When: Saturday, August 6th

Time: 11:00 am

Duration: 20 minutes + question and answer session.

Target Audience: From 6 years old

Speaker: Bernardita Ried, Master of Science in Physics mention in Physics U. of Chile and soon student of the Ph.D. program in Physics mention in Astrophysics at Stanford University (United States) and disseminator of the Center for Astrophysics CATA.

2.- Vostok Program and Valentina Tereshkova’s Feat

Summary: Did you know that the first astronauts were in a cabin where they could barely move? We will talk about the Vostok program, the first humans in space and much more in this talk.

When: Saturday, August 6

Time: 12:00 noon

Duration: 20 minutes + question and answer session.

Target Audience: From 6 years old

Speaker: Carolina Agurto, postdoctoral researcher, Department of Astronomy, Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, University of Chile. Member of the Star Tres outreach team and PhD in Astronomy from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), Germany.

3.- The Space Shuttle

Summary: Probably the most “charismatic” spacecraft in history, the Space Shuttle is in the collective imagination of young and old. This talk, specially designed for children, will be full of videos and spectacular photographs of some of the most wonderful and eye-catching missions performed by the shuttle.

When: Saturday, August 6th

Time: 18:00 hours

Duration: 20 minutes + Q&A session

Speaker: Jennifer Anguita, student of the Master’s Degree in Science, mention in Astronomy, Universidad de Chile, and disseminator at the CATA Astrophysics Center.

4.- MASTER LECTURE

The triumph of human ingenuity… the trip to the Moon

Summary: In 1969 the whole history of astronomy and astronautics would change forever. Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon, after taking off – along with two other American astronauts – in the Saturn V spacecraft, a 110-meter-tall monster. This talk is a tribute to that fantastic spacecraft.

When: Saturday, August 6

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Duration: 20 minutes + question and answer session.

Speaker: José Maza, astronomer at the University of Chile, researcher at the CATA Astrophysics Center and winner of the 1999 National Prize for Exact Sciences.

Day 2: Sunday, August 7

1.- Title: A stellar shot. The first trip to Proxima Centauri.

Humanity has never visited another planetary system. That’s why Breakthrough Starshot is one of the most ambitious projects in the history of astronautics. Powered by solar sails, a spacecraft would travel to the closest star to the Sun. Traveling at 20% of the speed of light, the spacecraft would take 20 years to reach its target. We’ll tell you about it here.

When: Sunday, August 7

Time: 11:00 a.m.

Duration: 20 minutes + question and answer session

Speaker: José Utreras, PhD in Astronomy from the University of Chile and disseminator of the Center of Excellence in Astrophysics and Related Technologies CATA.

2.-Title: Space Crew. The spacecraft that seeks to populate Mars

Abstract: A bi-planetary species, that is the aspiration of Elon Musk, CEO of Space X for humanity, and for this his company has generated the ship called Starship, a rocket of 120 meters with a huge capacity and that will seek to sail the cosmos to begin the installation of the first human colony on Mars.

Speaker: Silvio Ulloa, Master’s student in Science, mention in Astronomy FCFM U. de Chile.

When: Sunday, August 7

Time: 12:00 hours (noon)

Duration: 20 minutes + question and answer session.

3.- To infinity and beyond (Gravity Assists)

Summary: Can you imagine traveling through the universe, using the planets to save fuel, the truth is that it is possible. A spectacular astrophysical effect called Gravity Assist is the key, transforming planets, stars and black holes into acceleration ramps for a space mission. Pay attention to this talk… you won’t be the same after it!

Speaker: César Fuentes, academic at the Department of Astronomy FCFM of the University of Chile, CATA researcher and Ph.D in Astrophysics at Harvard University (USA).

When: Sunday, August 7

Time: 18:00 hours

Duration: 20 minutes + question and answer session

4.- Title: Artemis, let’s go back to the Moon.

Summary: Mankind will return to the Moon, women and men, will visit our natural satellite with the aim of establishing a sustainable presence in this celestial object, and this time women will go. A historic space adventure, that’s what this masterful talk will be about and it will become the final adventure of the day.

Speaker: Elise Servajean, CEO of the Center of Excellence in Astrophysics CATA and PhD in Science, mention in Astronomy, University of Chile.

When: Sunday, August 7

Time: 19:00 hours

Duration: 20 minutes + Q&A session
